北京的胡同多如牛毛，獨獨八大胡同聞名中外。因為當年，這裡曾是煙葉花柳巷的代名詞。『八大胡同』在西珠市口大街以北、鐵樹斜街以南，由西往東依次為:百順胡同、胭脂胡同、韓家潭、陝西巷、石頭胡同、王廣福斜街、朱家胡同、李紗帽胡同。
其實，老北京人所說的『八大胡同』，並不專指這八條街巷，而是泛指前門外大柵欄一帶，因為在這八條街巷之外的胡同裡，還分佈著近百家大小妓院。只不過當年，這八條胡同的妓院多是一等二等，妓女的『檔次』也比較高，所以才如此知名。
老北京城的妓院分若干等級。最早的妓院分佈在內城，多是官妓。現東四南大街路東有幾條胡同，曾是明朝官妓的所在地，如演樂胡同，是官妓樂隊演習奏樂之所。內務部街在明清時叫勾欄胡同，是由妓女和藝人扶著欄杆賣唱演繹而來的。以 後『勾欄』成為妓院的別稱。 明清時期，當官的和有錢的飲宴時要妓女陪酒、奏樂、演唱，叫做『叫條子』，在妓女一方，則叫『出條子』。

到了清末民初，妓院主要集中在前門外大街，一是因為這裡離內城較近，官員們出城享樂比較方便；二是這裡有火車站，南來北往的旅客多；三是前門外大街是京城著名的商業街，相當繁華；四是這一帶是戲園子、茶館、酒樓的集中地，吃喝玩樂，可自成一體。據30年代末的一份統計資料，當時『八大胡同』入冊登記准予營業的妓院達117家，妓女有750多人，這只是正式『掛牌』的，還不算『野妓』和『暗娼』。
老北京的妓女分為『南班』與『北班』兩種，一般來說，『南班』的妓女主要是江南一帶的女子，檔次高一些，不但有色，而且有才。這樣的妓女陪的多是達官顯貴，如京城名妓賽金花、小鳳仙等。『北班』的妓女以黃河以北地區的女子為主，相貌好，但文化素養差一些。『八大胡同』的妓女以『南班』居多，故多為一、二等妓院。而其它地區的妓院，大多數是『北班』。當時在京城做官和經商的人多是南方人，因此，『八大胡同』成為這些達官貴人經常出入的地界。
