一如預料，荷蘭終止了哥斯大黎加的黑馬之旅，但過程一點也不輕鬆，踢了120分鐘還拿不下對方，最後才在PK戰以4：3（0：0）擊敗對手，取得四強門票。

此戰結束後，2014年巴西世界盃四強全數出爐，分別是巴西對德國，荷蘭則與稍早淘汰比利時的阿根廷進行交手。

哥斯大黎加從小組賽起，就不斷創造驚奇，在死亡之組裡被烏拉圭、義大利與英格蘭夾殺，原本預估是爐主熱門，卻以分組第一晉級，還打到八強才被荷蘭驚險擋下。

這是哥斯大黎加隊史第四次參加世界盃，雖然黑馬之旅在八強告終，但已超越1990年義大利世界盃十六強成績，締造隊史在世界盃最佳成績。

荷蘭控球率幾乎是哥斯大黎加的兩倍，全場20次射門、8次射正，哥斯大黎加僅6次射門、1次射正，但纏鬥120分鐘仍是0：0。

幸虧PK戰先踢的哥斯大黎加在第二點與第五點被擋下，荷蘭則連續四點全進，取得與阿根廷一爭決賽門票的席位。
