有一天在外商公司上班的Maggie和外籍同事Ben聊天，聊到自己的想法。
「What are you going to sell? 」Ben突然問了這樣一句。
Maggie一聽很不高興：「只是想聊聊想法，他卻以為我想賣他東西。」
其實「What are you going to sell? 」不是「你想賣什麽東西？」而是「你的目的是什麼？」商業上最簡單的用字sell和buy不一定就是貨品的買賣。我們來看看幾個容易會錯意的例子：
1. I don't buy that.
(X) 我不要買。
(O) 我才不信。(別扯了)
這句話完整的說法是I don't buy your story，buy在這裡的意思是「相信、接受」，非常好用的口語。例句：
If you say it ' s true , I ' ll buy it .（如果你說是真的，我就接受。）
2. They are trying to buy time.
(X) 他們想買時間。
(O) 他們想拖延時間。
Buy time 是「拖延時間、爭取時間」的意思。Buy和time之間也可以加上受詞，例如：
Can't you just buy us some time? （你就不能幫我們再拖點時間嗎？）
3. Don't sell that man short. He's one of the smartest lawyers in town.
(X) 別少賣給那人。他可是城裡最能幹的律師。
(O) 別小看那人。他可是城裡最能幹的律師。
Sell short字面意思是別以低於應有的價格售出，引申為「小看」，不是短賣。別小看自己，英文可以說成：Don't sell yourself short.
4. Don't give me a hard sell.
(X) 不要給我很難賣的東西。
(O) 不要(對我)強迫推銷。
Hard是很硬、很難，人不想買東西的時候，硬把東西賣給他，強迫人買，就叫做hard sell。
