新球季還沒開打，皇家的牛棚就損失慘重，Luke Hochevar即將動手肘韌帶置換手術，治療受傷的右手，本季確定報銷。

皇家牛棚去年球季防禦率2.55居美聯之冠，且491次三振在美聯排名第6。

30歲的Hochevar，上個球季出賽58場，70.1局投球中，繳出5勝2敗、防禦率1.92，82次三振，皇家少了Hochevar，戰力將大打折扣。

總教練Ned Yost表示，手術預計在兩週後進行：「撕裂已經到50%~65%的情況下，他不可能投出去年的表現，這是無可避免的，這對球團與Luke來說是最好的決定。」
